Coffee is pretty rock n' roll, you know. Not folky or indie or garagey, but like, the good old-fashioned kind. The kind that drives a Harley. Like any good rock star, the presence felt upon our first meeting is larger than life. Though I had previously never heard of this place, it sinks in pretty soon that I probably should have. In Toronto, where bicyclists also have to contend with a maze of tracks, several at-grade railroad crossings are equipped with a rubber flange filler that is jammed down into the cracks of trolley tracks. The rubber is firm enough that it doesn't compress when a bike passes over it, but when a streetcar comes it squishes down and doesn't cause the train to derail.

The $15 million BIXI program – the largest of its kind in North America - consists of 300 bicycle stations scattered around downtown Montreal; supplying 3000 bicycles that are available to anyone with a working credit card. A BIXI user can purchase a membership for $5/day, $28/month, or $78/year. The membership entitles the rider to unlimited use of the BIXI system, providing the first 30-minutes of each trip for free. Additional charges only apply if the bicycle is used for more than 30-minutes at a time. Like Paris’ Vélib’ system - which offers 20,000 bicycles at 1,450 stations - it encourages users to take short trips to increase the user capacity.

Motorcycling Australia has called for the trial as an attempt to stem the rate of biker crashes and deaths over the past few years.

However, Bicycle Queensland manager Ben Wilson said the speed differential between bicycles and motorcycles "knocks this on the head" and would prove dangerous for cyclists.

BikingToronto is a TCAT supporter. Here's the latest from TCAT:

1. TCAT hosts sceening of Veer - Aug 27

The Toronto Coalition for Active Transportation is pleased to present Veer, a full-length documentary on community based cycling activism through five main protagonists. The film will be screened on Thursday, August 27th at 8 PM at CineCycle (401 Richmond Street, coach house). Tickets are $8 and there will be drinks and espresso available at the bar.

The film has received numerous awards, including Best Documentary at the Chicago Underground Film Festival (CUFF) and a nomination for Best Documentary at the San Joaquin International Film Festival. Cinematographer Jason Turner recalls, "in Feb the film played the Victoria Film Festival where it sold out its first screening, and was the only film to have a second screening added which also sold out with as many people waiting outside as got in to see it". So, if you want a chance to see Veer in Toronto, line up early for our August 27th screening at CineCycle, at 8 PM.  To learn more about Veer, visit their website.

2. Provincial and federal governments commit funds for Toronto recreational trails

The Ontario and federal governments recently issued a news release announcing more than $380 million in funding under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program and the Ontario Recreation Program (Ontario REC). It holds some good news for Toronto. Three recreational trails projects identified as priorities in TCAT's Platform will receive federal and provincial funding. Funds have been committed to build:

As reported in recent TCAT News, these capital projects were approved by the City of Toronto in December 2008 and will hopefully be built by 2010.

3. "The Fixer" tackles parking in bike lanes

The Toronto Star has a regular column called "The Fixer" that tackles City problems that readers alert them to. Recently they've called attention to a couple of persistent cases of blocked bike lanes.

The first is police barricades that have been blocking the St. George bike lane for about a year. When questioned by The Fixer, the Police agreed to find another place to store the barricades.

The second problem is that Annette Street is in need of road signs prohibiting motorists from parking in the newly installed bike lanes. This is just one problem of many that has piled up while the City's municipal workers have been on strike.

To report problems you encounter on the streets and sidewalks of Toronto, you can go to the Star's website and click on the "submit a problem" link or call 416-869-4823.

4. City Councillor Considers Mandatory Helmet and Licensing Motion

In a recent CBC interview with host Matt Galloway, Councillor Michael Walker told CBC Radio that he is considering resurrecting a motion in council to license cyclists and floated the idea of a mandatory helmet law for riders over the age of 18 and mandatory insurance for cyclists. Councillor Walker is hoping to get this on the agenda of the first Council meeting after the strike is over. It's unlikely that these proposals will go far since the City of Toronto has voted against licensing five times over the past 50 years and helmet laws are the jurisdiction of the province. However, if you have views on these issues, the Toronto Cyclists Union has posted a survey that takes just a few moments to complete and can be accessed here.

A joint submission that TCAT and the Toronto Cyclists Union made to the Toronto Star that provides our position on licensing can be found here
