E-bikes, or "power assisted bicycles" are relatively new additions to the streetscape. So much so, that the City of Toronto by-laws do not specifically ban them from riding on sidewalks (as regular bikes are).
The City is looking into changing this... and will be discussing it at the June 3 meeting (PDF link) of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee:
The General Manager, Transportation Services, in consultation with the City Solicitor, be requested to report on the necessary amendments to City By-laws to prohibit the use of “power-assisted bicycles” on City sidewalks, and that the report include alternative ways to enforce the proposed by-law.They'll also be discussing updating the by-laws to address adults riding bikes with small wheels (folding and BMX bikes, I'm assuming) riding on sidewalks.
The General Manager, Transportation Services, in consultation with the City Solicitor, be requested to report on potential amendments to City By-laws to address the challenge of adult cyclists riding bicycles with a wheel diameter of less than 61 centimetres on City sidewalks.View more on page 24 of the Agenda of the June 3rd meeting (PDF file).

Inside Toronto: Bike for Africa aims to bring bikes to community health workers In 2004 Mike Brcic, the founder and executive director of Bikes Without Borders, was in northern Nicaragua when he met the 10-year-old girl whose story has inspired a movement that's taking over Toronto Island this weekend. "She told me she walked to school everyday for two hours and home again for two hours," Brcic said. "That was kind of the moment that really impacted my life. "She was just so earnest about getting her education...she spent half her day walking," he said. "So I sort of vowed to do something about it."
Bicycle Trade Association of Canada applauds Toronto's bold new bike move 'We're thrilled with the decision [to install bikelanes on Jarvis],' said Janet O'Connell, Executive Director of the Bicycle Trade Association of Canada (BTAC). 'We need to be looking at ways to facilitate cycling as a mode of transportation - it's ecologically friendly, economical and healthy. Other cities around the world are becoming more bike-friendly, because it make sense. Toronto needs to do the same and this is a step in the right direction.'
Torontoist: This Bicycle is Leaving the Station Toronto is getting the first of what are planned to be several new bicycle stations this morning, aimed at making cycling a more comfortable option for commuters. Nestled into the pedestrian underpass on York Street right by Union Station, the station provides secure, monitored storage for bicycles, as well as changing facilities, a repair stand, and a few other thoughtful amenities, like a vending machine that dispenses tubes and lights.
CTV : New bicycle station opens at Union Station Downtown cyclists will soon be able to park their bikes in a newly opened facility at Union Station, the City of Toronto announced Tuesday. Mayor David Miller officially opened the secure, indoor bicycle station on Tuesday, which he said "builds on the City's commitment to ensure a sustainable transportation system in Toronto."
Toronto Sun: Bike racers set to hit the Market "It's terrific to have bike racing right in the heart of the city," said Councillor Adrian Heaps, chairman of the city's cycling committee. "These races are absolutely thrilling to watch. People who see the action will never forget it."
Toronto Star: Planning how to share the road If you are a cyclist, you deserve better than a terrifying squeeze into a leftover lane of traffic. If you ride transit, you deserve the speed and reliability of a subway, says the partner in CORE Architects. He focuses on sustainable planning.
Globe and Mail: Peddling for Votes The recent decision by the pro-David Miller majority on Toronto City Council to file an application for an environmental assessment on reducing the number of car lanes on Jarvis in order to provide dedicated lanes for bikes is a fascinating example of political mathematics.
Globe and Mail: A place to park your bike, and lose your excuses Tucked inside the enclosed pedestrian walkway on the west side of York Street, the new bicycle station will be used as a template for smaller versions across the city.

Brilliant and hilarious video from the always fantastic Streetfilms site in NYC:
This line cracked me up:
"Bikers think that they own the road, they dodge in front and they dart, and you know... I feel unsafe!"
The Toronto Star is reporting on a cyclist-car collision from last night:
The 53-year-old man was heading west on Rogers Rd. in the bike lane shortly after 7 p.m. At Silverthorn Ave., the van turned right and he hit the side.
The force of the crash threw him to the ground, where he hit his head. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Police are still investigating and haven't laid any charges so far.
"Both drivers could have had opportunities to avoid this, by being a little more aware and a little more alert," said Sgt. Tim Burrows, adding that the cyclist could have slowed down and waited for the van to turn, while the van driver could have paid closer attention and seen the cyclist coming up from behind.
I think it's a little pre-mature to blame one or both of the drivers... the van may not have signalled the intention to turn right... leading the cyclist to believe that the van would head straight through the intersection.
On the other hand, the van may have signalled, with the cyclist opting to pass the van in the bikelane.

City Council approved bikelanes for Jarvis on Monday. I was there along with a lot of other cyclists to show support for this. I took photos for you. :)

Before Council.

Lots of cyclists in attendance.

The mayor introduces the item, and then has a "spirited discussion" with Denzil Minnan-Wong about it.
I was there all morning (they didn't end up approving it until around 6:00 pm), and it was both interesting and boring. I think the most entertaining part was watching Councillor Doug Holyday throwing tantrums because he thought no one was answering his questions. I just think he wasn't listening carefully, because his questions were answered well, both by the mayor and transportation staff.

I joined up with the group commute at Woodbine and Danforth on Monday morning to go down to City Hall... here are the photos I took.

Lots of cyclists gathered at Woodbine and Danforth - about twice as many as in past years, by my guess.

Some group shots near Danforth and Carlaw.

Some more group shots as everyone gathered on Yonge south of Bloor.

Bikes locked up at City Hall.

Clay and Paper Theatre perform "Bicycle Revolution" on the square, and then on stage.

Dutch Ambassador to Canada got interviewed a lot. Love the shirt!
Go Green, Go Dutch, Go Bike!

Mayor and City Councillors on stage to welcome everyone.

Lots of exhibitor tents.

EcoCabs!
